Father: "So how much does it costs"

Daughter: "$770"

"Okay and how much is it in India"

"I tried looking in online and the closest model is around 60k INR but that of a low configuration. The exact model as this is not available with prices online. I will try to look for it in some store in some  mall."

"That’s okay. This is nice. I like it."

She smiled.
Mission Accomplished – she thought.
Mission to persuade him that $770 were well spent.

"So does it play songs. How is the sound quality?"

"Ofcourse Papa it does. It’s a $770 machine."

And there it was. Wide happy bubble of moment savaged

One Love...

Posted by Aditi Ray at 5:29 PM 11 comments

"The number you are trying to reach is currently unreachable."

She tried his number once again, but the monotonic voice on the machine answered instead of him.

It was exactly 30 days ago when he first saw her. It was an NGO. She was feeding a blind kid. His eyes were transfixed at her. He couldnt help but look at her... her smile.. her simplicity.. her face.. there was something very striking about it that made her diffirent, that made her stand apart from the others. There was something about her that hooked him immidiately. There was an instant pull...and he couldnt help but get drawn to her with each passing second.

"We have started ABS organisation. It is an online job searching portal. We are looking for an intern. Would you be interested in being a part of it ?"

The more he got to know her, the more drawn he was to her. There was an enigma about her...something that kept pulling him towards her. She was this simple-fun-loving-hard-working-intelligent girl. Nothing special in her appearance. Most of the times he saw her, she was plainly clad in a t-shirt or a kurti and denims. No make-up... a high pony... either busy on the phone or something else... never having a dull moment in her day... there was something...something... he didnt know what, but something in her that pulled him towards her.

"Here are the details, I want you to mail me the final draft by tonight."

She was so simple. Maybe it was her simplicity that attracted him...maybe something else.. he was still figuring it out. They spend most of the day together...either working or taking about work. It was a completely professional relationship. Only work...no play. But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

"What are you doing tonight ? I have got this amazing movie...and we can have some pizzas if you dont mind..."

Now he started knowing her. She was a completely fun-loving girl. She loved bike-rides...enjoyed long drives...was a complete foodie...she survived on chocolates...was a diet-freak... and there was something else too... she was engaged to her childhood sweeatheart.

"Have you seen this lake... its on the outskirts... not too far.. just an hour drive from here... but its a beautiful place... specially around this time...when the sun sets..."

She was beautiful. There was this calmness in her...she was so happy all the time. And now, at the lake shore, when the sun came down, painting the sky red...she looked so pure...so beautiful...so perfect. She felt like an island he longed for. With her, even the silence felt good.

"Dont.... You will fall in love with me."

She laughed everytime he said that. He knew she wouldnt fall for him. He was just a good friend to her...nothing more. A special one for sure, but thats it. He knew it would never be love... a two-sided one, between them. But that didnt stop him from hoping for it. Be positive, she always said !

"I am here for only a week now. When you are back from home, I'll be gone. Seniors first, remember."

He was graduating the very next week, and she wouldnt be here. She was going home for a short holiday. Her wedding day was closing down and she was busy with the wedding shopping. They still spoke on the phone for long hours. He knew he had to cut the chord that was slowly getting stronger day by day.

"I am sorry if I hurt you, but I wont come for your wedding. And please, dont say please..."

It was his convocation day. His family was besides him...his friends were cheering for him...the entire batch cheered and whislted for him when they announced his name in the best student category. But he felt an emptiness around him. He knew... it was now or never. He had to cut the chord. She had a different life, and he couldnt live that way. Life must move on...

"This is probably the last time we are talking. I want you to know that you are very special to me. A very special someone. And I cant be in touch with you anymore. And dont ask me for reasons... I have never given you any. I wish you be happy in your life forever. Goodbye! "

Belief !

Posted by Smita at 10:41 PM 8 comments

Ding Dong.

Kirti was sitting in her study room, completing her homework when she heard the door-bell.

She knew it was him. And her heart pounded more at the sound of his footsteps into the house.

“What will happen tonight?”, she was scared.

It’s been a week now.  Things had gotten worse from bad. She knew something bad was happening but didn’t know exactly what. She had heard her mother hiding from her and crying. But she couldn’t confront her with that because she herself had done that.

“God, please help us”, she prayed in her mind and got up from the chair and went into the drawing room to greet her Father.

“Hello Papa”, she said with a put on smile, trying hard to make the environment light but got back from him with a shriek.

Her father was possessed! Yes he was! She knew it the moment she saw his red eyes that night.

Mother had been hiding it all from everyone. News of the breadwinner in possession of a devil would have spread like fire in the society and the thought of being denied from everyone had forced mother to hide this all in lies.

But she knew it all now. Every scene was so clear in front of her.

Scene 1:

He was working. It was 1 at night and he was working. Sitting on his study table, amidst a heap files was Papa working. He sitting at the study table during night and constantly writing papers, mother called it extra office work again.

Scene 2:

It was the most happening place for the three of them after a tiring day. But his silence at dinner, a chirpy guy going silent was hard to believe for her as well as others, but mother hid it under the lie of him not keeping well.

Scene 3:

It was 11 at night. He had gone early to office that day. Even before Kirti left for school that day. 6 am was the time in the clock he left that day but now it was 11 and he had not yet come. And mother called it extra work.

“Memsaab”, Kirti heard her mother talking to the watchman.

“I know about such things. There is a very renowned Baba in our village. I will go and get you some of his tantrum things for your problem. I am sure he only can solve this. You don’t worry.”

Lines of worry were getting more visible day by day on her face. She too was not sleeping at nights now. Her father was also not sleeping. Things were not yet settled. Issue was known but the cause was still unknown.

Next day, the watchman got a clay pitcher.”Ask Sahab ji to fill water in this and then you keep it in your Puja room. The day the water will get dried this will break down and the curse will be broken. You just wait and watch”.

And things happened the way he had said. Exactly after 3 days the pitcher was found broken in the Puja room and father had started behaving bit normal. He had started eating properly, sleeping properly and was now back to his normal talking.

And that very evening Anjali aunty came and enquired about Papa and eventually he was not at home. The only she asked mother was,”He has started talking again? That’s strange and I smell clay, did you get a pitcher or something like that lately?”.

Mom was sweet in not replying back to her every question and Aunties question made it all cleared.

Kirti remembered that morning from when her father had started behaving differently. That was the morning when Anjali aunty was doing some ritual, supposedly a pooja vidhi in their garden and mother was shouting saying that the banana plant whish she was worshipping was not supposed to be worship since we consume it’s fruit and such plants are not holy for worship[ but Anjali aunty didn’t listen and had performed something and even Kirti’s father was heard arguing, “Why you are shouting? Let her do na. It’s just a small petty ritual. It’s not worth shouting.” His disbelief in the ritual had caught him!

It’s not about what you believe. It’s how that belief is about. If you believe in God and then you should respect the presence of the other side and maintain never to cross the line to make evil angry and let bad be more influential on you.

Respect, maintain the distance and be safe!

P.S: This is the first time I have tried my hand on mini-stories. I don't know if i have justified them well. Your opinions will be totally appreciated

Birth

Taking one look at the pink bundle in her arms made his heart melt.He didn’t want this little baby.He wanted her to abort it. But,seeing this little angel now he knew he was totally wrong.
He felt privileged. He swore to protect his little daughter more than his life.
He will be the perfect Dad

College Memories

Walking down the streets of her college, Ridika felt a surge of nostalgia getting over her.
The first day in college, white classrooms, old steps, the canteen gossip, old crushes, letter, fights, that farewell party.
Every memory deeply etched in her heart.
The only song echoing in her head was Shaan’s “Tanha dil tanha safar”

Marriage

Adorning a red 9 yard saree, loaded with lot of gold, flowers on her head and so many ladies fussing over her
There was a weird feeling of mixed emotions, she knew its time
Soon, she will sit on her Dad’s lap and amidst holy mantras, she will become someone’s wife and tears welled in her eyes

Death

She could not come to terms with the news she received. She was lost in trance.
Sitting in the middle of the room wearing a white saree, staring at the picture of the man she loved the most.
He couldn’t leave her and go so suddenly,he was with her this morning
No, It was not his coffin

Keira : The not-so-perfect girl (Final Part)

Posted by Keirthana at 7:02 PM 1 comments

Read Part 1 and Part 2
The lady finished talking and looked at Keira who sat there shell-shocked that she could not even bat her eyelids. Too shocked to react to anything. How is this possible? Same story? How did the lady knew that she had the exact story as hers? Is this lady crazy? Should she believe in the story? Something inside her said that she wanted to get out of the creepy place. She pushed the feeling away and asked the other Keira if she could see the mirror. That is the only way of finding out if the lady was insane or if this whole freaky incident is really happening to her. The other Keira went inside the cottage and re-appeared with what looked like a broken mirror which was missing a half. Keira took it with trembling hands and looked into it. And her eyes grew wider with every passing second.
Through the mirror, she could see her dad feeling proud of her with each and every step she took in life. She could see her mom swell with pride as she saw her daughter grow up into the bold woman just as she dreamed. She saw her boyfriend look at her as if he had never seen a woman as beautiful as her in the whole world. And she saw her life through the eyes of everyone else who had lived with her and everyone's view was much different from her own. And better.
Keira's heart beat faster than it ever did. This means that the crazy Keira lady was right. But she has to go back. She cannot just give up and stay on just like the other Keira. She ran to the cottage and picked up her backpack and starting walking in the opposite direction from where she came to the cottage. The old Keira yelled out, "Hey you! You are not going to make it. " Keira did not bother. She would not just give up. Definitely after what she has just realized. She walked on and on and on until she felt so tired that she could not take another step. Just as she was about to pass out, she noticed that she was on the green lanes along the main road from where she started. She felt that, that was the happiest moment of her life. She saw a bus approaching and she waved her scarf to halt it.
Once she boarded the bus,it struck her. The other Keira. She said no matter how hard she searched for a way back, she was not able to find it. But the way back was not all that complicated. It was just long. Did the other Keira give up that soon? Some piece of the puzzle was missing. As she fidgeted around, not knowing what to do, she felt something sharp in her jacket pocket. It was the broken mirror. In an impulse, she took it and looked into it. She saw the cottage, the other Keira. She yelled out, "Hey! I made it back. I am going home. How could you not find the way back home?Don't worry! I will ask the driver to turn back the bus and I will come and get you." And she went to the driver and frantically yelled her lungs out to stop the bus and turn it back. An obviously irritated driver asked her the reason and she told all about her and the other Keira as fast as she could and about the mirror. The driver eyed her suspiciously and told her that if she didn't shut up and go back to her seat, he would have to leave her there and drive ahead. Keira got mad at the driver's ignorance and waved the mirror at his face and asked him to see for himself. The driver took a look at the mirror and said, "Ha! I need a hair-cut." Keira was shocked and looked into the mirror herself and saw a disappearing outline of the cottage and the other Keira. Just as she slipped out of the frame, the other Keira said "No need to come back for me. I knew you would find your way back. You have already collected me and yourself and we both are going back to live the awesome life that is waiting for you." And with that, the fading became complete and she could see her reflection looking back at her. And then she knew. In an instant, the mist lifted.  She did not know how all this happened and she could find no logical explanation for the bizarre chain of events that have happened. Had she just been to the future and back? Will anyone believe this? Could this actually happen? She pushed all those questions away. But she did not want to go back asking questions. She had a lot more to do now. She has to live. Her life was waiting for her.
There are no second chances in life. Take up the first chance and live it, good or bad that it turns out to be, it is better to have lived it and tell that you did it that way rather than trying to be the best/perfect one who did not try it just because you know that you are not going to be perfect at it.

Keira : The not-so-perfect girl (Part 2)

Posted by Keirthana at 11:13 PM 9 comments

Read Part 1 here
This continued on until one day, Keira got so fed up with her life that she decided that she was not making any difference to her life or any others' and hence there was no real meaning for her life. The constant restlessness drove her crazy. In an impulse, she packed her bags and left the city without telling anyone.
She switched off her mobile and got into some random bus without even looking at where it was headed to and took a ticket for the last stop. After what seemed to be an hour of journey, the bus stopped abruptly. Her co-passengers got down to investigate and she followed them to find out it was a break-down. Even the bus she came in was not the perfect one. Frustrated, she started out on her own, with her little backpack, walking along the green lanes along the main road. After sometime, when she looked around, she could not recognize where she was. There were tall trees all around her. There was little light, though she was sure it was early evening judging by the time she got down from the bus and took off. Unsure of what to do, she trudged along the path until she came upon a cottage.
She knocked on the door and waited. The door was opened by a sweet old woman who welcomed her into the simple cottage. Keira asked the lady what the name of the place was. The lady shrugged and replied it was nowhere. Keira was confused. How could it be nowhere? She asked again and again but she got the same answer. The next shock was that the lady introduced herself as Keira. What kind of freaky coincidence is this? They shared the same name. There were too many questions running in Keira's mind but she was too exhausted to start with all of them. So she just requested the lady to let her stay in for the night to which the lady accepted gladly and offered her dinner and then a warm bed.
For the first time in several days, Keira had a peaceful sleep. The next day, Keira woke up to rays of sun shining upon her. Clearer than she was the previous night, she went straight to the other Keira and shot out all her questions like where they were, how did the lady end up living her alone, where were her family and so on. The lady smiled at her and asked her to take a seat. Then she started talking. Her voice echoed through the silence.
"I am not sure if I have all the answers to your question. But I will tell you whatever I know. I will tell you the story of my life as I remember it. I was a normal girl who lived her life to a humanely possible extent. I cannot say that I excelled in anything but I could  not say that I had a perfect life, being the best in anything. The life that I wanted to live. To be perfect in at least something. I did not have a lousy life, but this want to be perfect and outstanding in something nagged me from the inside. I felt that I was not fulfilling any of my beloved's expectations or even my own expectations, for that matter.
So, one day I decided that my life had no meaning and started off on my own until I came here. I did not recognize it and I did not know how to go back either. Then I found a shred of glass that was lying near that tree. As I looked into it, I could see every bit of the life I lived until then. But the difference was I did not see through my eyes. In that mirror, I saw my life through the eyes of every other person who had been with me until then. It was then I realized that what I had was an awesome life even if not a perfect one. It was then that I realized that not being perfect in anything or not achieving anything that the world would go "oooh!" and "Aaaaah!" over, is not the only thing that we were made for. It was then that I realized what a fool I had been, despising myself for not meeting some expectations. Life is not just about meeting expectations. It is much more than that. But by the time I realized it was too late and I did not know how to go back from here. How much ever I tried, I could not find a way and so I gave up and stayed on. And sadly, I have found another Keira who has done the same and ended up the same way I did."
The lady finished talking and looked at Keira who sat there shell-shocked that she could not even bat her eyelids....

Keira : The not-so-perfect girl

Posted by Keirthana at 7:53 PM 4 comments

Keira looked at the woman sitting beside her. Wow! The girl was beautiful beyond normal standards. Normally Keira would not give in easily and accept that a girl/woman is beautiful. Girls' tendency, you see! But if any woman who made her go "Wow!" would be a lady for whom guys would die for. She did not acknowledge women who are ordinarily beautiful. Maybe it is because of the fact that Keira felt that she was not very beautiful. She knew she was not ugly or clumsy. She was good-looking. Just good-looking as any other normal person. She knew for sure she was not the stands-out-in-the crowd type. And maybe because of that, she have always admired women who managed to look beautiful all the time - be it a fresh morning or after a tiring day at work. They managed to find time to gloss up their lips even on the way back home. Keira had had days when she wanted to be one of them and desperately tried on every bit of make-up she can and she felt that she was the same good-looking but nothing more. Nothing special.
Not only in looks, Keira had the same feeling about her life. She had been a good daughter, a good student,a good friend, a good employee, a good girlfriend, a good citizen etc. But when she searched an answer for what she has achieved, what special thing she has done that not many others have achieved, she drew a blank.  She felt dull and gloomy at such times when this line of thought crops up and she would make her mind to do something more useful, cooler than the normal. But then again, after a few days, she would realize that she is wrapping her in an artificial shell and she is trying to be a person who she is not.
This happened over and over again, building up her insecurities and making her life shades of grey. She knew that she had been a good daughter, but she felt that she could have been a better one if only she could have developed passion in medicine and had done the Doctor's course just as in her dad dreams. She knew she was a good student, but she felt she could have been a better one if only she could have got the hang of Mathematics and was the best at what she studied. She knew she was a good girlfriend, but she felt that she could have been better if she did not fight with her love. And so on. The list was really  endless. She felt she could have been better at everything, but she seemed to wind up at just being good.
This continued on until one day...
To be continued..

Of Snow and Bells

Posted by Anonymous at 3:13 PM 13 comments
The heavy Church Bell rang thrice as I stared out of my window across the snow filled, cold street. I was lucky to hear the sound floating to me from St. Margaret's Church. It made me feel alive. Blessed. May be I should take a walk. I thought. London was Cold. Cold and Wet. I didn't know what I hated more. Festivities were heavy in the air but I missed the warmth I used to feel at home. I knew I was going to be late for University again. The Gray sky warned that soon there could be a heavy snow fall. Good Riddance. I turned away from the window and pulled my muffler tight around my neck. It had been a month since I was here. And peace had evaded me since then. I felt lonely. And My Birthday was just a week away. Sigh. This was going to suck. I sighed once again and grabbed my coffee and cold toast.
St. Margaret's, Westminster
I brushed my hair too roughly not caring how it stood up stubbornly. I had apparently straight hair. But now it was frizzy! Gah!! Bad Bad Bad. I dressed in a Black overcoat, put my gloves and shoes and lip balm and stepped out. The Old Land Lady was adjusting the pots on her window. She waved at me as I gave her a courteous smile. "Merry Christmas My Dear!" She said. I thanked and turned swiftly on my heels. The walk to the Church would usually take me some 15 minutes but I stretched it to 25 today. I walked slowly, staring at the festoons and hollies and mistletoes. In day light, they seemed somber to me, just like my mood.
Sigh. (Image Source)
I sighed for the nth time and quickened my steps towards the Church. I reached into the lane that was parallel to the abbey. I entered, rubbing my palms together and watching my breath freeze before me. The Church was empty at this time of the day. I gave a relieved and content sigh. The Pastor looked at me and called me forward. He was intrigued by the Indian who never failed to visit the Church, even if there was a blizzard. I lit a candle at the altar closed my eyes and thanked whoever was listening to me. I got up slowly, peace descending on me like a warm shroud. I turned to take my usual seat at the end of the gallery when I noticed her again. She was a fellow woman who too never missed coming to Church. Her eyes caught mine and she surprisingly gave me a warm smile, which sent warm tingles in me. She was a familiar. But I couldn't recall. I gave her a smile of my own and withdrew my thoughts to myself. I stared at the high ceiling, the wide arcs and the brilliance of the people who created it. My thoughts didn't go to what I missed or my miseries but suddenly loneliness grabbed me as I cried a solitary tear. Here, no one saw me.

I controlled my ragged breath as I felt a movement next to me. She was sitting next to me. I gave her a quizzical, lopsided smile.
"I'm sorry I must be intruding. But I felt a company would make you feel better." She smiled at me again. I nodded in approval for words were failing me.
"I see you here everyday but you don't seem Christian. I mean no offence when I say that. Are you a believer?" I could feel her hesitation as she tried to make conversation. Not trying to be the mean bitch I felt like, I answered as politely I could, for Britishers were known for upper stiff lip. I wouldn't take that risk.
She intrigued me. (Image Source)
''I am from India. I come here...because it soothes me. The calmness here. No, I'm not Christian and no offence taken." I smiled at her feeling better. She nodded but I saw some hesitation. I didn't know what to ask or how to. So, I blurted the first thing without thinking.
"Would you mind some coffee? Ofcourse unless you have family engagements." I knew I had committed a faux pas. It was Christmas for crying out loud! And just because I was alone, didn't mean I would invite strangers. To my relief she said, "As I said, a company is never bad. I would love coffee." This time she grinned and I noticed a sadness in her eyes but didn't dwell on it too much.We got up together.
I chose a table near the windows of the cafe so that some light could come in. All the while we spoke of lighter things like weather, festivities, coffee, what we liked and disliked. She was full of light. And Happiness. And warmth. And being with her made me feel light. Like a sun beam was focused at my heart. I was getting cheery by the moment, my University Lecture long forgotten. We were laughing and enjoying ourselves. Suddenly I asked her~
"I come to seek peace but why do you visit Church every day without fail?" Again that same sadness I had noticed before flickered on her face. I regretted my question instantly. I tried to cover up "Hey, it's all right. I didn't mean to be intruding!" I squeezed her hand sympathetically.
Her eyes were sad... (Image Source)
"I visit Church everyday, for I love to believe that my loved ones are happy. Few moments of Life, I live with them in there." She said with a sad smile. "My family died in an accident last month. I am alone. And Christmas doesn't seem the same anymore. I used to watch you and wonder what struck you. Your determination, even though you were new here, gave me strength."
I felt ashamed of myself. This woman was made of iron. And she thought I was strong? I gave her a tight smile as she looked away, her eyes filling up. I paid, while she resisted. We decided to part ways. She hugged me and gave me a tiny golden bell from her wallet. "You gave me something to look forward to. A friend. This bell will remind you of me...when you go back to India." She said. That tiny bell and her words were a gift I didn't rightfully deserve. Before she could disappear, I ran after her. She stopped as I called out to her.
The tiny golden bell... (Image Source)
"Will you spend the Christmas with me?" I asked, aware how lonely I was sounding, still.
"I would love to..." She smiled and walked away.
